Patient information pelvic floor
according to R. Tanzberger

Pelvic floor physiotherapy according to Renate Tanzberger – what can you expect?

(All further information can be found on the website

1. Do you have a doctor's prescription for pelvic floor physiotherapy?

Here are some TIPS:

Ask the prescribing physician (or specialist) to prescribe "physiotherapy as a double treatment" – at least for the first prescription.

This will give you enough time to get to know your therapist and calmly discuss your concerns in person.

Your therapist will have time to begin recording your physiotherapy findings and, if necessary, make initial suggestions.

Please bring the following to your first treatment, if available:

  • Doctor's letter(s)

  • Surgical report(s)

  • Imaging (X-ray, CT, MRI, etc.)

  • List of medications you are taking (dose and time of day); a copy of the relevant package inserts is also welcome.

2. What can you expect at your first meeting with your physiotherapist?

2. What can you expect at your first meeting with your physiotherapist?

First, your therapist will work with you to complete a diagnosis:

In the waiting area – please arrive approximately 15 minutes before the start of your initial appointment – you will complete a questionnaire that requests key information. This will allow you to prepare for the initial meeting, and your therapist will receive initial information.

In the treatment room, you will describe your concerns during a free conversation. Your therapist will likely ask more detailed questions and review any documents you may have brought with you.

You will receive your first "homework": Your therapist will ask you to complete a series of drinking and voiding logs over several days. You will be given detailed and clear explanations of how this is done. You will also receive written instructions and a sample completed log to take home. This should and will serve as a guide for your to-do list.

Important: Please be sure to keep a consistent and accurate record during the specified period!

3. What can you expect at your second appointment with your physiotherapist?

Please be sure to bring the drinking and voiding protocol series with you to your second treatment appointment.

Your therapist will evaluate the protocols together with you:

What have you already noticed while recording?

What does the specialist notice?

What connections to your dysfunction can be identified?

What are the consequences? What can be changed, for example, in drinking, storage, and voiding behavior, to stimulate and train the continence system? You will receive tips and tricks.

Based on the findings, your therapist will develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs and abilities. Together, you will discuss your treatment path and adapt it to your individual diagnostic findings, as well as the possibilities of your daily life.

You will now be given initial suggestions for protecting and training your pelvic floor and continence system, which you should and must implement between treatment appointments and integrate into your daily life.

4. What will your treatment plan include?

Our pelvic floor and continence system is very complex and requires structure-, function-, and system-specific stimuli and (training) options.

First, you will become familiar with the structures and their functions that are not visible or perceptible in everyday life. You will also be offered suggestions for perceptual and sensing work.

You will also receive important information about the anatomy, functions, and processes surrounding our pelvic floor and continence, as well as your dysfunction.

Some influences in our everyday posture and movement can place undue strain on the structures of our pelvic cavity and thus cause damage. You will receive appropriate advice to protect your structures from excessive or incorrect strain, e.g., how can I change positions, sit, bend/lift/carry, stand, walk, cough and sneeze, defecate, and much more in a way that protects them? But also: Which physical activities are suitable for me, should be adjusted, or perhaps even avoided for a while?

Based on the results of your drinking and defecation protocol series, you will discuss whether you need to make adjustments to your behavior or habits in this regard to support and sustain rehabilitation.

Our organs and muscles can only function optimally when they are well supplied with blood and oxygen. You will learn about various options, such as physical therapy, that you can try and practice at home.

And, of course, you will also receive therapeutic exercises to train your pelvic floor and sphincter muscles! Your therapist will select the exercises that are right for you and work with you to develop your individual home program.

Here are some initial answers to the most frequently asked questions.

Frequently Asked Questions about Therapy

How long do you need to do the exercises and consciously control the structurally correct behavior you want to change?

Until your pelvic floor and continence system functions "all by itself" again. So, the timeframe is manageable!

How long will it take?

That depends

on the causes and extent of your dysfunction and

on your commitment to implementing the programs defined for you.

But what remains our lifelong task to protect the pelvic floor and continence?

Posture and movement are essential for a healthy life. Therefore, all insights that serve to protect against incorrect strain will always remain with us.

And what else can you do?

The tips you receive regarding your drinking, storage, and emptying behavior serve to protect and train the structures and their functions. They are a "round-the-clock" training.

Integrate these new insights and behaviors into your lifestyle as a matter of course.

In this way, you will have achieved a great victory over your previous everyday stressors!

We wish you healthy success!
